Kevin Held Put Together a Project

Everyone person in America who is old enough knows where they were and what they were doing when they heard that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been hit by airplanes. It was a surreal moment and one which, to use a cliché, “changed everything”. September 11th, 2001, is a day which, to borrow a phrase from President Roosevelt, shall live in infamy.

To ensure that no one forgets this day or its victims, Kevin Held put together a project called the 9/11 Memorial Quilt. The image you have in your mind of the quilt in question is probably much smaller than the project’s version…by orders of magnitude. Indeed, Kevin Held says that when it is completed it will span a length equal to twenty-five football fields.

The quilt will be massive, but that is not in itself a memorial. The idea is that each piece of the quilt consists of a king-sized white sheet that is decorated and dedicated to a victim of the September 11th attacks. These sheets are then sewn together into a large quilt and presented to the President. Kevin Held would also like to organize a collection of high school bands from all over the country to be at this event—they would simultaneously play patriotic anthems during the quilt’s presentation.
